Welland

About Us

Welcome to Welland Forum

We are a group of local volunteers dedicated to shaping the future of the Welland area through neighbourhood planning. By identifying local priorities and collaborating with residents and businesses, we aim to create a stronger, more connected community in Market Harborough.

Although it is a relatively new ward, its boundaries having been drawn as late as 2019, Welland has a rich and sometimes surprising history. Have a look at the Resources tab to see the “potted” history created by one of our volunteers, Kerry Ward. Some highlights are:

Burford Green is where King Charles I and his troops set off from on June 14th 1645 for the decisive Battle at Naseby. A plaque stands to commemorate this.

A windmill once stood on Green Lane, where Fairfax Road ends and Cromwell Crescent begins.

The very first National Hunt Steeplechase Challenge Cup took place on land to the west of Farndon Road, hence many of the names of roads on Farndon Fields estate.

The Vislok nut was invented here.

And the Caxton Type Foundry, established on Lathkill Street, was groundbreaking in the print industry in the late 19th century.

As time has moved on and the area has become more residential, it has developed into a bit of a centre for sports of all kinds. The Leisure Centre which is the base for many local sports clubs, Harborough Town Football Club, Market Harborough Rugby Club – all of these are based in Welland, along with numerous footpaths and cycleways, giving easy access to the surrounding countryside for walkers, runners and cyclists.

So there is much that we are proud of and want to protect, whilst also looking to continuously meet the needs of our changing population.

About Welland Forum

The Welland Neighbourhood Forum was formally designated in 2023 as the statutory body responsible for creating the Neighbourhood Plan for the Welland area of Market Harborough.

Since its formation, the forum has worked collaboratively with other forums – ArdenLittle Bowden and Logan & Town Centre – to engage the local community. The insights gathered will shape the policies in the Welland Neighbourhood Plan, which is scheduled for completion in 2025. This planning document will guide future planning decisions in the area, supplementing the Harborough District Council Local (HDC) Plan with locally relevant details.
